AIRDRIEONIANS-CREST-RED

After torrential rain seeing last weekends trip to Cowdenbeath postponed, this Saturday we return to Ladbrokes League One action for the first time in 2016, hosting local rivals Airdrieonians.

Airdrieonians, who currently occupy seventh spot in the league, come into Saturday’s match in poor form, last week losing their third match on the bounce in a 1-0 home defeat to Stenhousemuir.

Despite Eddie Wolecki’s side struggling in recent weeks, Rovers player/manager Darren Young still believes the Diamonds will provide a stern test for his fourth placed Rovers.

“Airdrieonians will also be looking for their first win of the year and under new manager Eddie Wolecki. If we are not 100% up for it then we’ll be punished.”
Outwith Andrew Barrowman – who remains in the stands courtesy of a leg injury – the coaching staff will have a full squad to pick from.
The sides have met twice already this season, the first being a 3-1 defeat at Cliftonhill in early September, the other being a 1-1 draw in Airdrie, a game that saw John Gemmell controversially shown red in the dying minutes.
With this being Rovers first game of the new year, Young is hoping that throughout 2016, the club can replicate similar success as to what 2015 brought to us –  a year that will go down as one of the most successful in the clubs history.
“It was an amazing year and I’m very proud and honoured to be one of only 3 managers in the clubs 132 year history to have won a title.” Young commented.
He added: “To achieve this in my first year as a player/manager was a dream come true. By managing to keep the majority of the players It has probably also helped us with how well we have started this season in League One.”
“We won’t get ahead of ourselves even though we find ourselves going into 2016 in a good position. We’ll just take it a game at a time like we’ve done all season and fingers crossed we’ll come away with the three points.”
Last three meetings:
Airdrieonians 1 – 1 Rovers
Rovers 3 – 1 Airdrieonians
Rovers 0 – 1 Airdrieonians
