The ‘Rovers came into the match in high spirits, after a fantastic performance last weekend.  John Brogan started the same backline with PJ Morrison in net. McGeouch and McMahon missed out with knocks.

THE match began with both sides having chances, the home side had the ball in the back of the net after some poor defending, luckily the player who tapped the ball in was offside.
The ‘Rovers made some good chances in the first half, Jamie Watson was an ever-present threat and went close on numerous occasions.  He chipped the keeper with an audacious effort, only to beaten by the post as it narrowly bounced wide. He also had a looping header well saved by Jamieson in goal. Annan found themselves with the chance to go in-front after Wharton was adjudged to have committed a foul in the box.  Wallace converted the penalty, as it squeezed past the despairing PJ Morrison, who dived the right way. Lewis McLear was once again a constant menace for the opponents, driving the team forward. The second-half saw Annan go two goals ahead, once again the ‘Rovers were punished for not taking their chances.  Roberts found himself free in the area and finished in style after 55 minutes, sporting a no-look finish.

Finally, we put the ball in the back of the net.  Lewis McLear with a sublime free-kick which left the ‘keeper hopeless on the 60-minute mark.

We pushed forward and went 4 vs 4 upfront, Cunningham, Kearney and Gracie all attacking replacements. However, we couldn’t make it count. Roberts sealed the three points for the home team, after finishing from close range on 75 minutes.  A flurry of late corners were not enough to get back into the game.

FT 3-1

John Brogan spoke to Ben Kearney after the match.

“The three goals we lose are terrible, it’s a stupid penalty kick to give away.” “We missed some sitters at 0-0 which in the end has cost us.” “Its a harsh reality, but you will get punished off a team that are well established in this league like Annan.” “The defending was back to our bad habits, it’s not good enough.” “Larry and Paul should be back for our next game.”

Ben Kearney.
