Player/manager Darren Young spoke to the media following Saturday’s 4-2 friendly defeat at home to Falkirk.
“Overall I thought the boys done great. Again, it’s not about the scoreline just now but the only difference between the sides was did two unbelievable strikes from the boy Will Vaulks.”
“The boys managed to show great belief and great character coming back from two goals down to draw level.
“Young Calum came on and done very well, getting on the ball, passing it and moving and managed to score two finisher type goals, but again everybody played their part and we managed to bring on a few young boys who’ll gain experience having now been brought on against top sides like Motherwell and Falkirk.”
“It’s just a shame that I came on at two each and the game ended up finishing 4-2, but no I can’t ask for anymore, I’d rather we played teams of this quality and today we played what I thought was the best team we’ve played in the two years that I’ve been here – just their passing, their moving, Houstie has got them playing brilliantly and they were perhaps a little but unlucky not to gain promotion to the Premiership last season.
“You do probably learn more from a defeat against a team like that than going to beat a junior team four or five nil.”
“In terms of myself, I’ll still be there and there about, just more as a sort of guidance role and cover if needed. Last season, it wasn’t an injury problem as some had suggested, it was just the boys were better than me.
“When I started last season, I ended up getting ill and thereafter the boys went on a good run, getting up to third in the league, so that was the reason I never put myself back in.
“Obviously the legs aren’t quite the same as they used to be, but I’ll be there for cover and we’re still looking to add one or two other bodies to the squad before the season starts and hopefully we can get them in soon.”
