Player/manager Darren Young spoke to the media, following Rovers terrific penalty shootout victory at Rugby Park.
“I thought we defended very well. We’ve once again got a good defence, it’s been that way for the two years I’ve been here, we were great in the first year, last year likewise and hopefully we can have the same this season too.
“That was three clean-sheets in the Betfred Cup, against some tough opposition too, so that’s something we’re all delighted with. We had a few decent chances to score as well and at one point were beginning to dominate, but fitness sort of tailed in the end and Killie were throwing everybody up for the winner.
“Overall though, we can’t complain, the boys are absolutely delighted, and to top it all off by winning on penalties is absolutely brilliant.
“The goal that was chopped off too, I don’t think Ryan Wallace done anything wrong. The Killie guy has just ran into the goalie – like 5 mins earlier when the referee never gave anything.
“I also think that we should have had a penalty as well when Cal Ferg got pulled back in the box by Stevie Smith, who was having a little laugh about it after the game. Sometimes these go for you, sometimes they don’t. To be fair, the boys didn’t dwell on it and bounced back well.
“We said beforehand that with the pitch we’d be able to pass the ball about and that’s what we done.
“Against a full-time side, their fitness is probably better, but all of our guys put in a great performance.
“Defensively we were brilliant throughout and stuck the penalties away nicely. Overall, it’s been a great day for us and we now need to take that kind of performance into the league campaign.”
