Rovers fall to late defeat in Monklands Derby

Category : Uncategorised

league 1It wasn’t to be the perfect start to the new year on Saturday, as Rovers fell to a 2-1 defeat to rivals Airdrieonians despite looking in control of the match for much of the 90 minutes.

First half

It was a fantastic start to the match, Rovers coming close through Paul Willis and Scott McBride, whilst Airdrieonians forward David Cox struck a well-hit free-kick off the face of the goal.

It was Rovers that took the lead on 26 minutes, some fantastic passing football involving Josh Mullin and Scott McBride seeing the latter whip a delightful ball onto the head of John Gemmell, whose effort flew into the back of Neil Parry’s net.

The visitors, again, hit the woodwork 15 minutes from the break, the impressive Nicky Cadden firing his effort of Ross Stewart’s left-hand post.

Second half

Just four minutes after the restart, former Rovers favourite Parry impressively denied Gemmell and Rovers a second, this time tipping over the strikers headed effort from a wide Gary Fisher free-kick.

At 55 minutes, Parry again produced a fine save to stop Rovers from adding to the score-line, Josh Mullin finding himself one-on-one with the Airdrieonians keeper, however, Parry was able to block the effort from point-blank range.

The chances Rovers missed did eventually prove costly at 67 minutes, Cadden’s corner causing havoc in the Rovers defence, before Alan Reid nodded the ball into his own net.

Rovers did continue to threaten for the remainder of the match however, but, with only three minutes remaining a deep cross from the dangerous Cadden was headed into the back of the net by Jim Lister, turning the score-line completely around and handing Airdrieonians manager Eddie Wolecki a first taste of victory.
